Dance shows are big works. Big works are made up of many small works. A dance show takes a team of people, working together. Every contribution matters. But one contribution that no dance show can happen without is the music. Would not be much of a dance show without music! DJs are the unsung heroes of dance. Unless you have DJed a show, you can’t imagine what they go through, chasing music, the time and effort it takes to organize a playlist, adjust their players’ settings to sim conditions so that they don’t crash or stall, and then the pressure of angry divas when the music stuffs up through no fault of their own. DJs seldom get noticed or even thanked. But they are the nerve center of any dance show, so I wanted to highlight them here on Showtime, let everyone get to know them better, and remind them of how much they are appreciated. This is an on-going series.
Nine years ago, Eostri found Second Life through a friend. Having already been a DJ in real life, it was natural progression for her to start DJing in SL as well. She has been DJing for a total of thirteen years online and in real life! She plays a medley of music including Rock, Goth, Pop, Techno, Trance, EBM, Industrial, and more. When she is not DJing she is roleplaying, modeling, and dancing, plus she produces a burlesque show called “Opulence”. Very busy!
She is not concerned about SL addiction, saying, “I have been addicted at some points over the last 9 years, for sure.” As, she finds the impact SL has on her RL to be a positive one.
Nine years is a long time, and Eostri has seen many changes over the years, including more live DJs and more options. But what changes would she like to see? “Better tips, busier clubs.”
Her favorite thing about DJing in SL is, “The freedom to play my favorite music for people and to turn them on to new music.” Her least favorite? “Bad tips, people asking me to play off-genre songs or trying to backseat DJ.”
If you want to be a DJ, Eostri’s advice to you is, “Get A LOT of music and be able to download any song at a moments notice.”
Thank you for the time, energy and passion you give to SL dance, Eostri!
